NPS is a long-term retirement planning scheme governed by the PFRDA and the Central Government. It ensures pension after retirement for individuals working in both private and public sectors. Once you become an NPS subscriber, it’s crucial to check the balance regularly to ensure you are on the right path to achieving your retirement goals. The NPS account balance depends on two factors: your voluntary annual contributions to the NPS account and the returns from investing 40% of the corpus in annuities.

Although you will receive a Statement of Transaction (SOT) once a year by post at your registered address, you will also receive its soft copy at the registered email address. However, if you want to do a more frequent NPS balance check, below are the multiple methods available.

Prerequisites for Checking NPS Balance

These are some technologically advanced ways for NPS balance checks. However, you still need a few things to check your balance using any of these methods. Below are the prerequisites for checking the NPS balance:

  • NPS Account Number: When you become an NPS subscriber, you receive an NPS account number that becomes a unique identification number for your identity.
  • PRAN (Permanent Retirement Account Number): The Permanent Retirement Account Number or PRAN is a unique 12-digit account number each individual joining the National Pension System receives. It is identification for new and existing subscribers, giving them access to pension funds for life.
  • Internet Connection: If you check your NPS balance online via website, app, or email, you will need a stable internet connection for a smooth NPS balance check. Without an internet connection, you cannot request an NPS statement through these mediums, making them useless. However, in the absence of the internet, you can check your NPS balance using the SMS or missed call service.
  • Access to Registered Mobile Number and Email ID: When you request an account statement via SMS or email, ensure you have access to them so you can check your statement when they arrive. You may also receive a confirmation message that you must confirm to receive the statement.
