Yes, bank can debit TDS from your principal amount, but only in the following scenarios:

1) If you have booked a Fixed Deposit with a monthly or quarterly interest payout option - Where the interest is already paid to you in your Savings/ Current Account; and at any time in the financial year, if we find out that the interest you have earned exceeds the exempted limit of Rs.40,000  

2) If you have multiple Fixed Deposits and few of them got matured - Where the interest and principal amount are already credited to your Savings/ Current Account; and at any time in the financial year, if we find out that the interest you have earned exceeds the exempted limit of Rs.40,000.
