If you own a vehicle, you need to stay alert of the new e-challan fraud!

Fraudsters are sending fake e-challan payment messages that look similar to real challan notifications. These messages contain harmful links that can compromise your bank account and other personal information when they are clicked.

How does this fraud happen?

Step 1: Fraudsters pose as traffic police officials, sending text messages demanding payment for traffic violations.

Step 2: The message usually has a link that the customer is asked to click and make the payment online.

Step 3: The link takes the customer to a fake website where they are prompted to provide their personal and financial information.

Step 4: In some cases, by clicking on the links, the customer can end up granting hackers access to their mobile devices, resulting in fraudulent withdrawals and loss of sensitive personal information.

Step 5: Fraudsters also try to scare customers with threatening calls and messages from numbers that appear as ‘City Control Room’, ‘E-Challan Recover’, etc. on phone apps.

Tips to stay safe against the e-challan fraud:

  • Avoid clicking on any links in text messages. These links could lead to fake websites that look authentic.
  • If you receive a message from the traffic police, contact the traffic police department first before making any payments.
  • If a message asks for personal information or sensitive details such as PIN, OTP, etc., stay alert before disclosing these details.
  • Payments towards e-Challan should only be made on the official site/app. Check the site URL carefully. Avoid opening links that do not end in ‘.gov.in’.
Note: The official website of the traffic police department
    is https://echallan.parivahan.gov.in/
  • Do not disclose your secret OTP to unknown individuals.
