Indian Green Building Council

Founded in 2001, the Indian Green Building Council is a non-government organisation formed as a part of CII. The IGBC aims to have around 1000 crore sq ft of sustainable footprint by 2022. Its vision is to “Enable a sustainable built environment for all and facilitate India to be one of the global leaders in the sustainable built environment by 2025”.

The council provides services like certifying green buildings, developing new green building rating programmes and, conducting green building training programmes, and IGBC membership. Its roles also include collaborating with state and central governments, bi-lateral multi-layered agencies and the World Green Building Council to promote environmentally friendly and green building concepts.

What are green homes?

Green buildings optimise the usage of natural resources like raw materials, water and energy. They generate a minimum quantity of non-degradable waste and are equipped to consume minimum non-renewable energy. They are designed to accommodate technologies like cooling systems and lights with sensors to automatically adjust the room temperature and lighting, which saves energy. They are also equipped with technological advancements like smart lighting systems and air-based flushing systems in toilets to avoid water wastage. Also, energy-saving appliances like LED’s and CFL’s are used in such buildings to ensure maximum conservation of energy.

Benefits of green buildings

These green buildings are sustainable and planet-friendly. They have no or minimum wastage and have no emission of carbon dioxide or other harmful gases. These homes are designed by architects to utilise natural resources to the fullest without generating waste or harming the environment. Moreover, as they use minimum energy, it helps you save money and reduce wastage.

Rating systems for green building

The rating system based on five elements of nature: earth, water, fire, air, and space (Panchabhutas). The three primary rating systems for green buildings are:

  • Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA),
  • Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), and
  • Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE).

The process of defining the rating is different in all the three systems. For instance, with these rating systems, the IGBC certifies that the building in question incorporates sustainable practices and ensures energy saving without harming the environment and the planet. IGBC provides different green ratings for different types of construction projects like IGBC Green New Buildings, IGBC Green Existing Buildings, IGBC Green Railway Station, etc.
